“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms: “‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, “‘May another take his place of leadership.’
Peter quotes two psalms in this part of his speech. Remember he has stood up in the presence of the followers of Jesus. They are still waiting for the promised out pouring of the Holy Spirit. They are perhaps afraid and uncertain. They have been praying together. The first psalm he quotes, psalm 69, perhaps reflects their own feelings. David wrote of countless men who hate without reason (69:4), enemies seeking to destroy without cause (69:4), putting ones hope in God (69:6), a call to God to turn his face to him (69:16-17). There is reference to the vinegar given to Jesus in the cross (69:21) and that the enemies place will be deserted (69:25). I wonder if the song formed a part of the followers worship. Psalm 109 follows a similar theme of betrayal. Verse 4 begins with, “In return for my friendship they accuse me …” how sore those words must have felt. It is easy to be offended on another’s behalf. By including this quotation it feels that Peter has found Judas guilty. The verse quoted may another take his place if leadership (v8b) in preceded by, “When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. May his days be few; (v7-8a). It is understandable to be so angry and to quote such scripture. I wonder what Jesus would have said?
